Balaclavas are essential warm clothing items that have survived centuries of challenging weather and conditions. Initially developed in 1854 by citizens who knitted warm clothing for soldiers, who were fighting the Crimean War during the Battle of Balaclava, the design was eventually mass produced with variety material styles and designs. Today the balaclava is still worn for tactical applications but also as general protection against cold, foul weather conditions as outer layer or a base layer under hard hat or hood. When combined with safety goggles, a balaclava can also be worn as a ski or snowboard mask.
